I am a dreamer – my mind does not stop – ever! I am always thinking of new ways I can do things, new adventures to try, new challenges. They don’t always come to fruition but I will always try – haha. If you asked me 10 years ago where I would be now I would never have imagined I would own my own Interiors business.

This has been my mantra since we opened the shop.

My journey started in 2009 when my friend and I decided – on a whim- that we would open a Homewares and Gift store. We had limited experience in retail, no business sense, I loved interiors and decorating and so did she – so we pretty much were just winging it! We opened a small boutique store in Gymea Bay called 44 Home (our birthdays were on the 4th and we had just turned 40).

44 Home – Gymea Bay

So this is where my passion for decorating and interiors was fed and nurtured. After a few years a customer approached me and asked if I would be interested in helping her style her home for sale. She had become a regular and loved what I did in the shop, but most of all she believed in me. I actually had a passion for real estate and had also been researching and following the market for quite a few years, I knew that I could style and decorate, I had the stock in the store to be able to do it and so I gave it a go! I found a place where I could rent furniture and larger items from, purchased some extra bits and pieces and raided the store! The end result was fantastic and I had soooo much fun doing it – this was the beginning of my property styling and decorating journey!

I studied and learnt everything I could about decorating, colours, floorplans, lighting, vignettes, etc etc. I poured over every magazine I could get my hands on (I had hundreds!) and scoured the internet. Gradually I built up a small garage full of accessories and artwork and was styling homes locally every now and then. I had customers asking me to help them decorate their homes and assist them in choosing fittings for their builds and renovations.

It was then that I realised that the Homewares and Gift business was not my true calling – I closed the shop and officially began Haven Interiors & Styling in 2014. After a year or so I outgrew my garage and sublet a warehouse space with a friend. It wasn’t long before I started to overtake this and moved into the warehouse I am in now. I have never wanted Haven Interiors to become a big company – I love that it is a small, local boutique business and that our customer service and local knowledge are second to none. I have made so many friends through decorating homes and assisting on builds and have now decorated over 30 homes since then!

This journey for me has been a demanding one on my body, my mind and my family and I could not have done it without my husbands support. There have definitely been times when I have wanted to give up, but my love for what I do has made me push through and keep going. I know that my business will change and evolve as I do and I trust in the journey that where it will lead me is where I am meant to be.

I am writing this with that hope maybe one person is inspired to go for it and NEVER give up on their dreams. Whether you are 20, 40 or 60 years old you have a life to live – so chase what you want and go get it! Its never too late. I still have so many things I want to do that my husband just rolls his eyes at me and says ‘what now!’. Flipping houses, building holiday homes down the south coast, maybe write a coffee table book…….the list goes on!
